WATERMAN CHINESE MEDICINE
TREATMENT OPTIONS
Acupuncture

Acupuncture involves the insertion of fine needles into specific areas of the body known as Acupuncture points, lying on various channels of Qi and Blood that the ancient Chinese conceived of flowing throughout the body. Blockages of these substances can manifest in pain and disease, therefore the systematic needling of these points seeks to readjust and harmonise the body, allowing for the free flow of Qi and Blood resulting in the release of pain and the return of equilibrium to the individual. The duration of treatment and retention of needles can vary from 20-40 minutes per session and should be painless. However, the manipulation of the needles to achieve the ‘de qi’ sensation, required for therapeutic effect to occur, can cause some mild tingling and local numb like sensation.

Tui Na Massage

Translated as push and grasp, Tui Na is a type of Chinese Medical Massage involving the use of various massage and manipulation techniques applied with the fingers, thumbs, knuckles, elbows and palms. Rotation and traction can be applied to the joints as well as using acupressure on various points on the body. Working within the same theoretical framework as Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine, treatment is based on restoring the smooth flow of Qi and Blood, with an emphasis on relaxing the muscles and tendons, and has been used in China particularly for the treatment of musculoskeletal and paediatric disorders. It can be used as a standalone treatment or in conjunction with Acupuncture as well as Cupping and Moxibustion therapy.

Chinese Herbal Medicine

Chinese Herbal Medicine has a long, vast and rich history in the treatment and prevention of disease. In contrast to Western Herbalism, Chinese Herbs are typically prescribed in formulas, usually comprising between 4-12 herbs but can be more or less. They are traditionally prepared as soups but modern inventions such as powders and teapills have made them easier to consume in this current day and age. There are thousands of herbs listed for medicinal use in ancient Materia Medica but today around 300 are most commonly used. The bulk of Chinese Herbal Medicine is plant based, comprising of roots, barks, flowers, stems and seeds but minerals and even a small amount of animal products may also be used. No endangered species are prescribed by Waterman Chinese Medicine and the pharmacy we use to order our prescriptions, Lian, strictly adheres to CITES provisions.
